JULIE AND JULIA - JUNE 2010
Julie and Julia: 365 days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen
By Julie Powell
Can a book transform a life?
The life of Julie Powell is quite boring. She is a 30 year old wannabe writer trapped at a dead-end job. Answering telephone calls from victims after the 9-11 attacks and listening to complaints all day long. It’s no wonder she’s depressed and feels her life has no purpose. Her dreary, monotonous life takes a turn when she invents an assignment to cook every, and I do mean every, recipe from Julia Child’s cookbook, “Mastering the Art of French Cooking” – all 524 recipes in one year!! It doesn’t end there. She decides to document her progress on a blog. There are many similarities as well as differences between Julia Child and Julie Powell as Julie’s writing sometimes humorously transcends the pages she writes on. She writes in her blog every day and checks to see how many followers she has. At first it seems easy enough. However, Julie soon finds out it’s not quite as easy as she first thought. She moves along from recipe to recipe savoring her accomplishments, and dishes, and writing in her blog about all the challenges. She is supported and encouraged by her husband, friends and many blog followers. Julie conquers every recipe and perseveres to the point where her life is no longer….ordinary.

I made all of the food for this book discussion. I thought since the book was about food - we should have food. It was a big hit. The previous book discussion I facilitated was "The Accidental Tourist" by Anne Tyler.
